Raking the Grey Eminence Tour: Experimental film & sound performance from Winnipeg Canada

Raking the Grey Eminence Tour: Experimental film & sound performance from Winnipeg Canada. Thursday, December 16t: Tulsa, OK, The Circle Cinema, doors 8pm.

Aston Coles & Irene Bindi (both of family noise band Blind Squab) are touring a new project, The Double Hook. The psych/noise duo grew from earlier experiments with home-made instruments and amplification.  Bindi plays on a halved drum kit fitted with primitive electric pickups, while Coles plays a circuit-bent feedback instrument he made from an analog mixer found in a garbage pile.  The Double Hook is a project built around Bindi’s 16mm film experiments, with the film projection controlled by movements of a secondary shutter attached to the kit.  Inspired by repetition in motion, her new works Kickshutter Furs and Celestinorosapalido draw heavily from 1970s structural film tradition.

The Double Hook will perform three U.S. dates this December:

Sunday, December 12th: Austin TX, The Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, 10pm

Tuesday, December 14th: Albuquerque, NM, The Kosmos, doors 8pm

Thursday, December 16t: Tulsa, OK, The Circle Cinema, doors 8pm

They’ll be sharing the Austin bill at the Alamo Drafthouse with fellow Winnipeg artists Doreen Girard and Slattern (Julia Ryckman), in “Winter Night”, a program developed collaboratively between Girard and Bindi.  Girard’s layered slide-based projections are designed to be shown from her own hand-built projectors.  Slattern, Winnipeg’s musical femme fatale, provides a brooding accompaniment composed specifically for Girard’s newest historical-based work.  “Winter Night” was developed around thematic patterns including the use of found technologies and materials, and the extreme weather of Winnipeg, the world’s coldest English-speaking city.

For the remainder of the tour, The Double Hook will be joined by Oklahoma-based Nathaniel Young (Ajilvsga, Alms). Also appearing will be Oklahoma and New Mexico artists including Baby Shampoo, and Bee Wing/Stop Balding (Jeremy Barnes of A Hawk & a Hacksaw and Brian Gillespie of Our Years with Light).
